1. At the Fried Chicken Steak Stall

Xiaomei: Umm... I’d like one fried chicken steak. How much is it?

Boss: 100 bucks.

(Xiaomei gives the boss 100 bucks.)

Boss: (Do you) want it spicy?

Xiaomei: Yes, mildly spicy, thank you.

Boss: Okay.

Xiaomei: May I ask how long I need to wait?

Boss: About 10 minutes.

Xiaomei: Okay, I’ll come back to pick it up a bit later.

(Xiaomei leaves and browses elsewhere first.)

2. At the Braised Snack Stall

Xiaomei: Hello, I’d like one of this, one of this, one of this, and this.

Vendor: Okay.

Xiaomei: What is this?

Vendor: This is tempura; it’s very tasty.

Xiaomei: Okay, I’ll take one of this too. How much is it?

Vendor: This’ll be 105 dollars.

(Xiaomei gives the boss 110 dollars.)

Vendor: Here’s your 5 dollars change.

Xiaomei: Thank you. Do I need to wait?

Vendor: No need, it’ll be ready soon. Do you want it spicy?

Xiaomei: No, thank you.

(One minute later)

Vendor: Miss, your order is ready!

(PS. At braised snack stalls, I often like to order dried tofu,

Yi noodles, kelp, tempura, and sweet potato leaves.)

3. At the QQ Ball Stall

Xiaomei: Boss, I’d like an order of QQ balls.

Boss: Okay, what flavor do you want? We have plum powder,

seaweed, and cheese flavors.

Xiaomei: I want plum powder, thank you.

Boss: Okay, that’ll be 30 dollars.

(Xiaomei pays.)
